DASH Diet?


Last month, i got a call from my husband, he said that he had hypertension, and already prescribed with anti-hypertensive medicine(amlodipine)

I was panic, aik, pagi tadi sebelum pergi kerja nampak elok jer...naper tiba-tiba gi klinik?...
Rupa-rupanyer dia rasa macam berdebar-debar tiba-tiba tu yang pergi ke klinik yang berdekatan, noted BP 150/90. Dia kata Doctor dah check 2 kali dah, masih tinggi, tu yang suruh startkan ubat untuk 3 hari, pastu jumpa balik...what kind of management is that?..kalau lepas 3 hari BP turun then Dr tu nak stop kan ubat tu ker?then how he would know it is really hypertension or not?...rasa macam Dr tu tak habis khatam CPG hypertension jer...

So immediately i ask my husband to stop the medicine. 1st thing get appointment with pakar. Since susah sikit nak dapat appointment with hospital kerajaan, so we just get the appointment with An-Nur Bangi. Kenapa nak jumpa pakar, BP 150/90 tu actually significance, plus my husband that time not 30s yet, family history of pre-mature death and the most worrying part is he is a heavy smoker. So its increase the chances for him to have cardiovascular problem. Tapi untuk start anti-hypertensive yet, i think it's not necessary.

After jumpa pakar, dier pon ambik blood test, Fasting Lipid Profile(FSL), Fasting Blood Sugar(FBS), Thyroid Function Test (TFT, since my husband complain berdebar-debar)...
lupa pulak, pakar yang en husband jumpa nih, nama dier Prof Rasyid, consultant cardiologist..alhamdulillah rezeki my husband untuk jumpa Prof.

So no medication, cuma advice untuk control diet, stop smoking and exercising(common advice kan..tapi berapa ramai yang ikut?)

So my part, i start google, and i found out 1 interesting book about DASH diet, so i went to MPH and bought a book, the DASH diet for hypertension by Thomas Moore. Actually ada banyak buku pasal DASH diet nih..tapi i choose this one sebab simple. It explain hypertension in good way, and how to reduce it. They suggest some menus for the diet, but it just for examples. the most important is,
1)low in saturated fat cholesterol and total fat
2)emphasizes fruit, vege and fat free/low fat milk and milk product
3)include, whole grain product, fish, poultry and nuts.

So the first thing is doing grocery make-over ( make-over sangat). i start to do grocery shopping, instead of white rice, we bought brown rice, brown sugar, organic salt, low fat milk, smart balance oil dan etc.

Other than that, it also a good thing, i learn good cooking habit also, such as not put so much salt, make my own chicken stock, use olive oil to cooking, smart balance oil for deep fry and a lot more..and i'm still learn, and keep on learning. Who said you cannot have good food in healthy diet, the things that you need is the knowledge and skills.

My husband quit smoking completely, and start to exercise more frequently( as the treadmill already found our house..hehe).

After 2 month, repeat blood test showing impressive result. The cholesterol show improvement from 6.1 to 5.3. Alhamdulillah, Allah bagi peringatan pada kami sekeluarga. Selama in banyak sangat makan di luar, tak exercise, semua yang berlaku ada hikmahnya.

For me, i still learn and learn. Kalau dulu sangatlah liat nak masuk dapur, for now on, i'll try my best to cook, InsyaAllah. Semoga kami sekeluarga dikurniakan kesihatan yang baik-baik.

So pesanan penaja, if you trying to find good diet, i suggest you DASH diet. try to read the book first, and you will understand it better.
